This privacy policy will explain how I and any necessary third-party services use the personal data collected from you when you use my website.
Leon Bruns, responsible for this website and reachable by mail:
This website uses Umami for analytics. It runs on my own server at analyse.nyxnord.de, so no analytics company is involved. It collects:
time of access, what page you read, your operating system, your browser, the referer, from what country you're accessing this site, and how long you are visiting.
On top of that, a few actions are counted so I can see which features are used: switching the theme or language, using the search, opening the data sources on the statistics page, entering fullscreen on a map, searching for a location, calculating a route, and loading, merging, downloading or deleting a GPX track in the map viewer.
This data is anonymized and no personal information is collected. No cookies are used.
Some pages save things in your browser's local storage so they are still there on your next visit. This never leaves your device and I cannot read it:
your choice of light or dark mode, the last map position in the map viewer, GPX tracks and waypoints you add there, which switches you ticked in the digital independence article, and the Groq API key if you enter one on the AI page.
You can delete all of it by clearing this site's data in your browser settings.
This website is hosted by GitHub Pages, so their Privacy Policy applies.
Whenever a request goes to one of the services below, your browser makes it directly, so that service sees your IP address, your browser and what you requested.
The maps use map tiles by OpenTopoMap, which is the layer shown by default. Their site notice applies.
The maps can use map tiles by OpenStreetMap. Their Privacy Policy applies.
The maps can use map tiles by ArcGis. Their Privacy Policy applies.
The maps can use map tiles by MapTiler. Their Privacy Policy applies.
The maps can use map tiles by Mapy.com (Seznam.cz). Their Privacy Policy applies.
Location and Routing search is provided by Mapbox. Your search queries are sent by your browser to Mapbox. Their Privacy Policy applies.
The small models run in your browser. Their files are downloaded from my own server at data.nyxnord.de, which sees your IP address and browser while the download runs. Nothing you type is sent there.
The larger models run at Groq and are only used if you enter your own API key. In that case your browser sends the whole conversation, including everything you type, together with your key directly to Groq. The key stays in your browser and never reaches my server. Their Privacy Policy applies.
The air quality data is from the Landesanstalt für Umwelt Baden-Württemberg. A request is sent by your browser to their server at lupo-cloud.de.
Weather data is provided by Open-Meteo. Their Privacy Policy applies.
Inflation and population data is from the Federal Statistical Office of Germany. A request is sent by your browser to their server.
The CO₂ values are fetched from philippschmitt.github.io, which is hosted on GitHub Pages.
Some of the services above are based outside the European Union. When your browser contacts them, your IP address and the request are transferred to that country. This only happens on the pages that use the service in question.
GitHub, Groq, Mapbox and Esri (ArcGis) are based in the United States. Where a provider is certified under the EU-U.S. Data Privacy Framework, the transfer relies on the adequacy decision of the European Commission. Otherwise it relies on the standard contractual clauses used by that provider, or on Art. 49 (1) (b) GDPR, because the request is necessary to deliver the feature you opened the page for.
MapTiler is based in Switzerland, for which the European Commission has issued an adequacy decision. Mapy.com is based in the Czech Republic and Open-Meteo, Destatis and the LUBW are in Germany, so those requests stay inside the EU.
The legal basis is my legitimate interest under Art. 6 (1) (f) GDPR in running this website and understanding roughly how it is used. The third-party services above are needed to deliver the maps, data and features you asked for by opening the respective page.
Under the GDPR you have the right to access, rectification, erasure, restriction of processing and data portability. Since the analytics data is anonymized, I usually cannot link any of it back to you, which means I may not be able to answer a request about it. You can also lodge a complaint with your data protection supervisory authority.
Because the analytics are based on my legitimate interest, you can object to them at any time under Art. 21 GDPR, without giving a reason.
The quickest way is to switch on "Do Not Track" in your browser: the analytics script is set to respect it and then records nothing at all. Blocking analyse.nyxnord.de with a content blocker works just as well.
